Legal professionals can vote for one of three organizations for LexisNexis to support as part of an ongoing campaign to advance the rule of law

(firmenpresse) - TORONTO, ONTARIO -- (Marketwire) -- 10/18/12 -- LexisNexis® Canada (), a leading provider of content and technology solutions, announced today the launch of "Not in Canada," a campaign to raise awareness in the legal community of the atrocities of human trafficking in Canada. By means of advertisements, a website and messages sent directly to Canadian legal professionals, "Not in Canada" presents scenarios of individuals-often young, poor and alone-who are vulnerable and at risk for exploitation by those who would use them in the sex trade or for forced labour. The campaign challenges a common belief that such heinous crimes do not occur in Canada and asks legal professionals to help LexisNexis choose one of three Canadian organizations to support as part of an ongoing LexisNexis fundraising campaign to help eradicate the illegal trade of human trafficking. The other two organizations will receive LexisNexis® products and services to support their efforts.

"Canadians see images and hear reports of human trafficking that they assume are happening in other countries," said Ann Fullenkamp, CEO, LexisNexis Canada. "Unfortunately, there is plenty of coverage in the Canadian media of horrifying incidences that take place here. A story broke recently about the largest human trafficking ring in Canadian history. Its leaders were sentenced for luring people from Hungary to Canada and making them work long hours as slaves in construction jobs. Workers were held captive in basements with little food, they were threatened, and they were beaten. These men were cruelly exploited and abused, and it happened right under our noses in Hamilton, Ontario."

Lawyers, paralegals, law clerks, judges, law librarians, law professors, and all others who consider themselves to be members of the Canadian legal community are invited to vote for one of the following three organizations for LexisNexis Canada employees to support with time and resources:

To vote, please visit . Voting closes at the end of November 30, 2012.

Human Trafficking and the Rule of Law

LexisNexis is committed to combating human trafficking by offering direct financial support to organizations working in the field to eradicate the illegal trade. The United Nations estimates that human trafficking is the third-largest and fastest-growing criminal industry in the world. According to the Royal Canadian Mounted Police, every year 600 to 800 women and children are trafficked into Canada from other countries. Another 2,000 people are trafficked from Canada into the United States each year.(i)

The gross and unjust economic exploitation of vulnerable people, often women and children who are lured into involuntary servitude and sexual slavery, is a direct consequence of the absence of rule of law. The rule of law is a theme that unifies LexisNexis across the globe and is one that is passionately supported by the company's people. LexisNexis is committed to working actively to advance the rule of law, through its day-to-day business, products and services, and its actions as a corporate citizen.
