Kevin E. Hardy DDS: Oral Hygiene Linked to All-Over Health
A Study Investigating Oral Care Habits of Those Living in India Uncovered Startling Results; The Findings Caught the Attention of Kevin E. Hardy DDS
(firmenpresse) - CLEVELAND, OH -- (Marketwire) -- 10/29/12 -- It is well known that poor oral habits can lead to cavities and gum disease, but fewer people realize the condition of the mouth can actually indicate the overall health of the body. Poor oral health has been linked to heart disease as well as diabetes. A recent Dentistry iQ article noted these links through the lens of dental care practices in India. Dental professional Kevin E. Hardy DDS commented on these findings.
The article reports the study, carried out by the Indian Market Research Bureau, focused on Indians long-held and oft misleading attitudes towards dental practices. Just under half of those surveyed do not brush their teeth with toothpaste and a toothbrush. Of those who do brush, just 28 percent brush two times per day. In rural areas, individuals rely on their fingers, brick powder or neem sticks to perform oral care, notes the article.
In a statement to the press, noted: "Significant scientific research points to a strong link between chronically inflamed oral tissue and general health and wellness. Dental decay and periodontal disease has been linked to over 100 systemic diseases and an overall decrease in quality of life."
According to the article, over half of Indians with dental issues seek advice from general doctors or rely on home remedies. Some even seek the advice of chemists over dental practitioners. Additionally, most Indians do not incorporate consistent dental hygiene practices in their overall health care routines. The article also notes the study found 65 percent of those interviewed did not realize their eating habits could lead to dental issues.
Considering these startling findings, Kevin E. Hardy DDS stated, "It is of great importance to increase awareness regarding the relationship between oral health and physical health to both provide for a maintained vitality in the aging Baby Boomer population and the development of healthy young individuals. The general rule of the six month dental checkup is only the start, and it is important to remember that a vigilant brushing and flossing regimen at home is essential to maintaining a healthy mouth."
