Recent research shows that wedding gifts cost Britons an extra GBP 129 million per year(i). Wedding guests spend an average of GBP 51 on gifts for the happy couple. Despite the economic downturn, the amount that people are spending on wedding gifts has increased from GBP 47 in 2011 to GBP 51 this year.
Those aged between 18 and 24 years are prepared to spend more, splashing out an average of GBP 63 on each gift. Those aged between 55 and 64 are only willing to spend an average of GBP 46 per gift.

One item that might not be romantic but is certainly considered practical as a wedding gift is money. During these times of austerity, a number of couples are saving for their first home or would wish to spend the money on their honeymoon.
