(Oslo, 6 November 2012) EVRY and SINTEF will work in collaboration with 13 other
partners to develop an open platform that will support both the design and
distribution of cloud-based applications. PaaSage is supported by EUR 6.3
million of funding from the European Commission, of which EUR 1 million will go
to the Norwegian participants.

European industry, particularly small and medium-size companies, and the public
sector, are currently falling behind in taking advantage of the benefits made
possible by cloud computing.

This is partly because not enough applications are available, and the technology
involved requires a high level of technical expertise. These disadvantages are
reinforced by a high degree of interdependence between client applications and
cloud-based platforms, and the fact that it is currently necessary to lock in
with one provider in order to use cloud computing.

The European PaaSage initiative aims to make it possible for applications to be
transferred to cloud computing with the help of a new platform that removes the
need to lock in to a single provider. This will also make it possible to
transfer programs from one cloud to another in response to pricing and other
requirements.

"Our role as research specialists at SINTEF ICT will be to develop a language
(Cloud modelling language) that will specify applications independently of the
cloud computing provider", explains Geir Horn. This will make it possible for a
client application specified using this language to be easily transferred from
one provider to another. "We will also develop algorithms that can evaluate data
about an application while it is running, making it possible to establish
whether it would be better to run the application using cloud-based services
from a different provider".

"There are several reasons for EVRY's involvement in PaaSage. Firstly, the

project addresses the complexity and interdependencies that will result from the
development of large cloud-based applications. Our involvement in PaaSage will
give us first-hand expertise and competitive advantage for tackling these
challenges. Secondly, EVRY is very focused on the modernisation of IT for the
public sector, including central government, local government and healthcare.
The availability of efficient cloud-based applications offering high quality and
secure services delivered from Norwegian data centres will be an important
catalyst for this process. We are committed to being the best choice as an
interface between our customers' requirements and technology, and we see the
opportunities to build bridges with the academic world and research projects as
one of a range of important factors in achieving this objective", explains Frode
Finnes Larsen, Product Manager at EVRY. "Finally, we want to recognise our
social responsibility by contributing to more efficient and targeted use of
research funds by applying the results to real-life pilot projects".

PaaSage is co-ordinated by ERCIM, the European Research Consortium for
Informatics and Mathematics.
