(firmenpresse) - OTTAWA, ONTARIO -- (Marketwire) -- 11/09/12 -- The Professional Institute of the Public Service of Canada (PIPSC) is joining prominent scientists and advocates in calling on Environment Minister Peter Kent to take immediate action to stop his government privatizing the Experimental Lakes Area (ELA) and undermining Canada's ability to secure the health of its lakes and the sustainability of its freshwater resources.

Information that the federal Department of Fisheries and Oceans (DFO) is about to transfer the Experimental Lakes Area (ELA) to a private operator has spurred prominent scientists and experts to call on the Environment Minister to take responsibility and stop his government from abandoning this world-renowned scientific resource.

"The ELA is an invaluable scientific asset that is a perfect fit with the core mandate of Environment Canada," says PIPSC President Gary Corbett,. "Frankly, having the ELA on his team to contribute to his obligations to ensure a sustainable and safe environment for Canadians should be a no-brainer for Minister Kent."

In an open letter today, the Coalition to Save ELA, a national organization of scientists and citizens, called on Minister Kent to maintain ELA as a public science program to ensure that research at ELA continues to respond to government priorities, guide public policy, and remains in the public interest. They appealed to the Minister to step in to transfer the ELA facility and its science team to Environment Canada (EC) to maintain it as a public program under the purview of the Government of Canada.

The Professional Institute of the Public Service of Canada represents more than 60,000 public service professionals, including scientists working at the Experimental Lakes Area (ELA).
