The millionth tree in Germany was planted, together with the ministers, on Mt.

Bonn, Germany, 4(th) of May 2010 - The children from the student initiative
Plant-for-the-Planet are seeking to plant a million trees in every country on
the earth, each tree standing as a symbol for climate justice. In Germany, their
goal has been achieved:
On the 4(th) of May, 2010, in Bonn, the millionth tree was planted on Mt.
Petersberg. This occurred alongside the Petersberg climate dialogue, the
preparatory meeting for the climate summit in December 2010 in Cancun, Mexico.
The children from Plant-for-the-Planet, who have organized themselves into a
world-wide network, have achieved their goal of establishing their planting
campaign as an official event of the Petersberg climate dialogue. Together with
ministers and delegates of the environment from 42 participating nations they
planted the tree of the year, a four-meter high bird cherry, which like other
trees will not only remove an average of three tons of CO2 from the atmosphere,
but is above all a symbol for climate justice.
Children appoint the ministers of the environment as "Ambassadors for Climate
Justice"
Then the children appointed the ministers "Ambassadors for Climate Justice," and
brought them into the Plant-for-the-Planet community. At the same time, the
children gave the ministers an important task to take along to Cancun: The
central concern of the children, in addition to a total reduction of greenhouse
gases, is the establishment of global climate justice in terms of a single
amount of CO2 emission from every person. They find it unfair that people in the
industrialized nations do not have to pay for their higher CO2 emissions than
people in poorer countries, who have to suffer much harsher consequences from
the climate crisis.
The children asked the ministers of the environment to officially agree to a
world treaty based on the principles of climate justice, in the months leading
up to the climate summit in Cancun in December 2010. On this point, Isabel (12,
Mexico) and Felix (12, Germany) stressed that thousands of children will be
watching very critically, to see how seriously the ministers take their concerns
and how much priority they are given. After the failure of Copenhagen, the
children have particularly high expectations for Cancun.
Engagement under the Motto "Stop talking. Start planting."
For three years now, the student initiative has known the need for both the
public and politicians to finally do something about the climate crisis. Their
motto, "Stop Talking. Start Planting." stands as a call to action. It is also
the name of their communication campaign, which seeks to stimulate public
support and awareness of the childrens' efforts. On their eye-catching poster
designs, the children illustrate their point in a dramatic way by holding their
hand in front of politicians' mouths. The Petersberg climate dialogue
incorporated new designs with the current ministers of the environment.
New goals for the future are already planned
The million trees planted in Germany and the recording of the planting campaign
in the agenda of the Petersberg climate dialogue show how much
Plant-for-the-Planet has already achieved. However, the children are not
stopping there - they have already planned their next goal. Of course the effort
to plant a million trees in every country of the world will continue, including
as many more trees in Germany as possible. Moreover, the children are working to
increase the size of their international Network of Ambassadors for Climate
Justice to over a million individuals before 2020. Just today, they have
successfully gained 42 new ambassadors.
The student initiative Plant-for-the-Planet was launched in January of 2007 and
had its origins in a school paper of the then 9-year-old Felix Finkbeiner about
the climate crisis. At the end of his presentation of his paper, Felix
envisioned a future in which children could plant a million trees in every
country on Earth, in order to compensate for increased CO2 in the air. During
the following three years, Plant-for-the-Planet became a global movement,
supported by the UNEP and it now has high international political recognition.
Particularly important is the commitment of the children to the idea of climate
justice, in the sense of an overall reduction of greenhouse gas emissions, as
well as a uniform distribution of these emissions for all people, especially
given the fact that the consequences of the climate crisis have much harsher
effects on developing countries.
Currently Plant-for-the-Planet is working on building a well-organized
international network and thus to become an initiative of world-citizens
promoting climate justice. Already present in 72 countries, children are
pursuing the goal to plant one million trees in their country and to set up
world family signs for climate justice. Since the 31(st) of January, 2010,
Plant-for-the-Planet has been organized as a foundation. The foundation is
headed by a board of youth members, who themselves are all ambassadors for
climate justice, organizing planting sessions and giving lectures.
The worldwide communication campaign operates with the slogan, "Stop Talking.
Start Planting."
Plant-for-the-Planet is supported by its global partner the UNEP, the Global
Marshall Plan Foundation, the AVINA Foundation, the Club of Rome and Leagas
Delaney Hamburg GmbH. In Germany, PFTP is supported by Toyota, Develey Senf &
Feinkost, Hess Natur and Ernst & Young the Academy for the education of
children.
