Free Online Education Website Celebrates One Year Anniversary With $10,000 in Student Grants for Earning College Credit

(firmenpresse) - MOUNTAIN VIEW, CA -- (Marketwire) -- 11/13/12 -- , the free online college course site, today announced that in one year the site has reached over one million students. Education Portal offers free college courses that students can use to earn real college credit. The site's anniversary also marked a number of other milestones, including the addition of its 18th course, and a record 389,000 students visiting Education Portal in October. In celebration, the company will award $1,000 to the first ten students per month who use an Education Portal course to earn credit by passing the CLEP exam.

The cost of higher education is skyrocketing, and the nation's students face almost $1 trillion in student debt. People use Education Portal's free courses to prepare for the College Level Examination Program (CLEP), an alternative way to earn college credit. The CLEP is offered by the College Board, which is the same organization that offers AP and SAT exams. The program consists of 33 exams that lead to widely accepted college credit, allowing students to test out of up to two years of college at a fraction of the cost of a traditional education.

"Many people have heard of AP exams but are unfamiliar with other options for earning low-cost college credit, such as CLEP," said Jessica Bayliss, Director of Education for Education Portal. "We're dedicated to breaking down barriers to education, and cost is one of the biggest barriers students face. Our courses are a free resource that students can use to earn credit at over 2,900 colleges, including DePaul University, University of Arizona and Michigan State University."

Education Portal has already given four students the $1,000 award. "The psychology videos were a great study tool. I aced the CLEP exam and earned three college credits," said Claire Steiner, a nursing student who used the site's free videos to test out of prerequisites. The award is currently available to students who pass the or exams and awards for subjects such as US History, College Composition, and Introductory Biology will be available by the end of the year.

The site's unique model of teaching adapts traditional education for today's web user. Each course is made up short video lessons that students can watch anytime, anywhere. The site currently has over 850 fun and engaging video lessons in subjects such as math, science, history, English, and business. An 18th course, natural sciences, was recently added, and sociology, genetics and humanities are coming soon. In addition to a professionally produced video taught by a world-class educator, each lesson includes a full transcript and assessment material.

Education Portal's mission is to make education accessible. By creating free courses that lead to college credit, the site helps people who might otherwise not finish school save time and money on their degree.
