Scopis GmbH: Alarm function improves surgical navigation security
(firmenpresse) - (DGAP-Media / 30.11.2012 / 12:02)
With the latest software update for surgical navigation systems of the
MATRIX POLAR series, the surgeon receives additional assistance in reducing
complications and increasing safety. The navigation software for ENT-, MFC
and neurological surgery now contains a configurable alarm function: when
approaching critical structures, the system gives optical and visual
warning signals.
Based on the preoperative planning, with a few clicks anatomic structures
can be marked as critical and alarm distances can be defined. If the
surgeon is approaching the defined alarm zone around an anatomic structure
or relevant target point during operation with a navigated instrument, an
alarm signal will sound and a visual signal will be shown.
Reduced complication by active position control
The alarm function is based on an integrated measuring function of the
navigation system. By means of the continuous positioning
(http://www.scopis.com/en/news/all/detail-view/?tx_ttnews[tt_news]=80&cHas
h=da5a6f2ea2b35161b8e45448a3296b9f), the alarm function monitors the
distance to risk structures, like for example the carotis, nervus opticus
and the subcranial. In a two-staged process, approach and critical distance
is signalized by a warning signal.
The application of alarm functions in navigated surgery has been examined
in a study from Strauss et al. in 2010 (s. 'Strauss et al. 2010, Klinische
Erfahrungen mit einem Kollisionswarnsystem'
http://dx.doi.org/10.1007/s00106-010-2237-0). They examined the influence
on the clinical process with 104 FESS patients. The result shows - amongst
others - a significantly reduced complication rate due to the alarm
function without affecting the surgeon during operation by using the
function.
The warning sound can be enabled and disabled for each defined alarm zone
separately, but switching on and off all warning sounds globally with one
click is also possible.
Navigating with alarm function: benefits
- Increasing the ability to evaluate correctly the overall situation in a
certain moment during the operation, and therefore
- more safety in performing navigated surgical interventions as well as
- less intraoperative and postoperative complications
- Concentration on the situs, surgeon will be warned acoustically
- Easy to handle both preoperative and intraoperative
The alarm function is part of the navigation software NOVA 1.7.4 version
and later. The software is fully compatible with MATRIX POLAR planning
station and also available for application in neurosurgery and MFC surgery.
