Amsterdam - Soil & More was selected as an official carbon emission offset
project for WC2010 by United Nations and the South African Department of
Environment.
Soil & More's co-founder and managing director Aart van den Bos: "We are proud
that our South African project - Soil & More Reliance - is selected by such
prestigious organizations who clearly acknowledge our contribution to the
environment as well as to social responsibility".
Soil & More International BV (SMI), a company based in the Netherlands, was
founded in 2007 on the principle that economy and ecology are inextricably
linked. The company is setting-up and managing large-scale composting facilities
and is active in various countries (Mexico, Egypt, South Africa, India, Brazil,
Ethiopia). SMI's innovative composting technology qualifies as an emission
reduction project according to the UNFCCC. Currently, SMI generates its third
party verified carbon credits through methane avoidance.
Soil & More strives to address the world's biggest environmental and
agricultural problems, such as soil degradation, increasing amounts of waste,
excessive water use, climate change, foodsecurit. SMI partners with a.o. Oxfam,
FIBL (research), University of Twente, IFOAM, Global Reporting Initiative, Water
Footprinting Network, Clinton Climate Initiative, Fairtrade Labelling
Organisation and The Sustainable Food Lab.
Together with GRI partner Weleda, SMI is present at the Global Conference on
Sustainability and Transparency this month in Amsterdam. In 2008 SMI started to
carry out comprehensive carbon footprint assessments for Weleda concerning both
their company as for their whole product range in the Netherlands and Belgium.
Weleda's aim is to reduce carbon emissions where ever possible and compensate
the part that can't be reduced via the purchase of sector internal carbon
credits from SMI's projects. During the GRI conference Weleda will launch 5 new
Climate Neutral products.
Weleda sees the universe as one integrated whole. This view is not new, it was
shared by Rudolf Steiner, their founder, more than 80 years ago. They
passionately believe that health is much more than a lack of disease but instead
an integrated state of physical, mental and social wellbeing. This holistic
worldview is the basis of everything Weleda does, as products are created that
respect the environment, local communities and the global customers alike. In
the same way, medicines treat the whole person, enabling them to take
responsibility for their own health, while restoring their inner balance and
strengthening their life force.
