A portmanteau of Lainer’s daughters Korin and Katie, Korkat has been in business less than a decade, but already has made a name for itself in the outdoor furnishing world.
“With a 20, 000 square foot warehouse and 4, 000 square feet of office space, supported by 21 sales reps and four full-time installation crews, Korkat can install almost any outdoor furnishing like picnic shelters, water park equipment and adaptive playground equipment for children in a church, daycare school or public facility,” Lainer added.
Korkat especially enjoys building playgrounds for children with special needs.
“Too often some children are left out because of limitations. My company throws limitations out the window because all children need to experience playing on a playground,” said Lainer.
When designing a playground for special needs children, certain elements must come into the design for the safety of the child.
“Special needs children need certain safety parameters built into the playground for their safety,” Lainer said.
So, Lainer follows a strict set of guidelines when designing playgrounds for children who have special needs. Among those guidelines are:
• Fenced areas so those who are overstimulated will not run away
• Lots of nature; studies at the University of Illinois found that children with ADHD concentrate better when exposed to nature
• Quiet areas for those who become overstimulated with individual areas of play
• Equipment that moves in circles and swings
• Foundations that wheelchairs can easily go across
• Soft mats, sand boxes and water for various tactile sensations
• Soft, padded areas under monkey bars and other climbing areas in case of falling
• Wide spacing for children to play and not touch or bump one another
“It is only fair that any child have a place to play, regardless of a disability. These guidelines are established by the ADA and supported with university research. You can be assured our work will provide you with a safe playground for many years to come,” Lainer continued.
