An device is typically installed on the vehicle of an individual who has been convicted of a DUI violation. In exchange for allowing the convicted driver to drive their own vehicle with a restricted license, the ignition interlock requires that the driver complete a breathalyzer-like test by blowing into a handheld device installed into the vehicle to verify that they are not impaired before the car can be started.
In Colorado, ignition interlock devices are required if the convicted driver had a BAC of .17 or higher (more than twice the legal limit) at the time of the incident, or if this is not the first offense. In other cases, drivers who are convicted of a DUI may be eligible to have the device installed in order to reduce the amount of time that their license is suspended.
