Heraeus integrates Clevios?PEDOT:PSS technology in capacitive touch screen controller

(firmenpresse) - Heraeus Conductive Polymers Division has announced a breakthrough in capacitive touch screen controller technology together with the Commercial Films Group of Eastman Kodak Company, device manufacturer Azoteq and GSI Technologies. This device incorporates a new Clevios? PEDOT:PSS based two-sided transparent conductive film manufactured by Kodak for use in a variety of touch screen and signage applications.

The Touch Screen Controller IQS550 from Azoteq offers high-resolution touch and high performance hover capabilities with extended proximity range to track up to five fingers. It is the first touch controller capable of interfacing with touch pads and screens having higher resistance.
The IQS550 is the first product launch of a capacitive controller that utilitizes polyester (PET) films patterned with a conductive layer, marking a change in the way touch screen displays for handsets and tablet devices are manufactured.

For the past year, Kodak has been working with the Conductive Polymers Division of Heraeus Precious Metals GmbH & Co. KG, producer of Clevios? PEDOT:PSS, to create technologically advanced transparent conductive films with invisible patterning. Now with technology company GSI and device manufacturer Azoteq the first demonstration of this technology is available.

The projected capacitive film used in the Azoteq IQS550 is constructed with Kodak HCF-225 Film/ESTAR? Base and features transparent conductive layers on each side of the film - to save on both thickness and cost.
Using Clevios? PEDOT:PSS in touch technologies offers high transmission and the ability to be formed into unique sensors. Furthermore, patterning is completely invisible to the naked eye.

The invisible patterning process utilizes Heraeus component technologies, whereby a conductive pattern is screen printed onto Kodak HCF-225 Film/ESTAR? Base using Clevios? SET S - a masking polymer. Clevios? Etch is then used to create the non-conductive areas. After the process is completed, the masking polymer that protected the conductive pattern is removed.

Dr Ron Lubianez, Global Sales Manager at Heraeus, commented: "Optimized Clevios? highly conductive polymers and patterning materials have permitted new applications in touch technologies that were unthinkable only a few years ago. Now printed pattern technology is available at an economic price."

"Azoteq selected the Kodak PEDOT film for touch screens and track pads because it offers high transmissivity and the ability to be formed into unique sensors" Dr. Frederick Bruwer said. "In addition the patterning is completely invisible to the naked eye and can be manufactured as a double-sided sensor that significantly reduces cost."

"The quality and uniformity of the conductive film coating, much less than one micron thick, opens the door for a range of new applications" said Michael Wobser, Director of New Business Development for Kodak"s Commercial Films business. "These films provide high transparency and conductivity with low haze and neutral color, and come with a feature set that meets the design specifications of touch panels and related applications."

The Azoteq IQS550 controller will be introduced at the Flexible & Printed Electronics Conference & Exhibition (FlexTech), Phoenix, AZ., January 29 - February 1st (Heraeus Booth #35), On February 1st at FlexTech, Ron Lubianez, Ph.D., Global Sales Manager, Functional Coatings for Heraeus will present a conference paper, "Conductive Polymer Films and Invisible Patterning Techniques for Transparent Electrodes" during which the IQS550 controller will be demonstrated.
