National PTA Responds to USDA Rule on Competitive Foods in Schools

(firmenpresse) - ALEXANDRIA, VA -- (Marketwire) -- 02/01/13 -- The following statement can be attributed to National PTA® President Betsy Landers:
National PTA commends the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) for releasing this morning a proposed rule on competitive foods, a move that initiates a public comment period on food for sale through vending machines and other sources at schools.
National PTA and its network of nearly 5 million parents and educators strongly supported the enactment of the Healthy, Hunger-Free Kids Act, which passed with bipartisan support in 2010. Its continued implementation, including the establishment of nutritional guidelines for competitive foods, is a top priority for the National PTA.
With the goal of supporting the USDA in delivering the best guidance and improving access to healthy food for children and youth, the association plans to provide constructive feedback in response to the proposal's details and encourages its members to do the same. Additionally, National PTA will continue its efforts to increase families' awareness of healthy foods and the significance of physical activity.
As outlined in its , National PTA also supports the provision of guidance and technical assistance on Local Wellness Policies, and continued improvement of the nutrition standards for meals served as part of the National School Lunch Program.
National PTA® comprises millions of families, students, teachers, administrators, and business and community leaders devoted to the educational success of children and the promotion of parent involvement in schools. PTA is a registered 501(c)(3) nonprofit association that prides itself on being a powerful voice for all children, a relevant resource for families and communities, and a strong advocate for public education. Membership in PTA is open to anyone who wants to be involved and make a difference for the education, health, and welfare of children and youth.
