- RAN (RFID-based Automotive Network) - for Optimal and Transparent Control
of Automotive Industry Processes
Hoehr-Grenzhausen, 23rd June 2010: Specially-tailored vehicle
specifications, cutting-edge drive technologies and an ever-increasing
number of innovations are forcing a constant expansion in the range of
variants. Consequently, car manufacturers are now concentrating on their
key competences and reducing their vertical range of manufacture,
triggering the development of complex supplier networks. The suppliers in
question range from small businesses and mid-market players to corporate
groups, each supplying to car manufacturers around the world. The global
linkage of suppliers by ship, rail and HGV integrates further companies in
the production process. The manufacture of a German car therefore involves
numerous companies, which form a complex production network. Such complex
networks require careful monitoring and management.
The RAN project is designed to enable the efficient exchange of information
for the entire automotive industry, using an information broker concept
based on standardised processes and state-of-the-art RFID technology. The
aim is to achieve - for the first time - an industry-wide agreement of
standardised methods with the inclusion of all companies involved in the
supply chain. The information broker enables the standardised exchange of
process-relevant, real-time data for supply chain control and optimisation
in a decentralised network. Assistance systems synchronise planning and
actual data, offering guidance where deviations arise. This control concept
can be quickly and flexibly adapted in response to rapidly changing market
situations. Standardised 'Auto ID' equipment and process modules reduce
searching times, price-reduced stock clearances, series defect costs, loss
of production, excess stocks and costly traceability actions where quality
issues, e.g. involving lead times, occur. Role descriptions for the various
process partners, such as suppliers, service providers and OEMs, simplify
integration in the network. The resulting process frame then provides the
modules and integration guidelines for new network participants. A RAN
certification rounds off the integration. The solutions, which are
standardised on a joint basis, are added as prototypes to the examples of
use, before being verified and optimised. Homogeneous, industry-wide
standards simplify the co-operation and enable considerable cost-savings.
