Precisis AG announces new software development with 'iDeepBrain'
(firmenpresse) - (DGAP-Media / 26.02.2013 / 11:44)
Heidelberg, February 26th, 2013. Precisis presents their plans for medical
software developments as part of the recently approved ZIM (Central
Innovation Program for medium sized companies) research project iDeepBrain.
This includes major medical improvements in the area of high precision
stereotactic and brachytherapy neurosurgery with partners from Universities
in Heidelberg, Mannheim and the City Hospital Karlsruhe.
Tumors are the second leading cause of death in the Western world.
Chemotherapy, surgery and radiotherapy represent the three therapeutic
options available to the patients, and very often a combination of all
three. A special treatment called brachytherapy is combining the latter two
by the insertion of miniature radioactive seeds into the cancerous tissue.
In order to achieve this, high precision and a reliable simulation of the
surgery is essential. The same precision is equally paramount in other
neurosurgical interventions such as Deep brain stimulation - a highly
sophisticated technique for the treatment of functional diseases like
Parkinson or Dystonia. With these two medical issues at hand, the
iDeepBrain project came to take place.
iDeepBrain incorporates a total redesign of the previous PraezisPlus 3, a
surgery planning software owned and distributed by Precisis AG since 2002
for that purpose. In addition to the completely redesigned and fully
automated Brachytherapy capabilities, the new development will furthermore
add Diffusion Tensor Imaging DTI features (also known as Fibertracking
imaging techniques), capable of high-resolution display of nerve fibers in
the brain. This will be of major assistance to Neurosurgeons in the field
of Deep brain stimulation to precisely locate the very core of the targeted
area in the brain.
The project - scheduled for 3 years - is conducted with Precisis' research
partners from the Heidelberg University, the University of Applied Sciences
in Mannheim and the scientific advisor Dr. Donatus Cyron from city Hospital
Karlsruhe.
Dr. Vitor Vieira, iDeepBrain project manager expresses his expectations,
when he states that 'with our partners and the expertise over the recent
years in Software development for high precision application in the
neurosurgical field, I'm excited to see the improvements this new software
will bring to assist the surgeons and consequently to the benefit of
heavily ill patients.'
As a medical device manufacturer and software supplier, Precisis AG is also
confident that the new generation software with its modular compilation,
intuitive and ergonomic usability and restructured pricing will better
serve the customer-specific requirements than all previous products.
The new software planning system will undergo the first patient trials in
the third Quarter of 2013.
