(firmenpresse) - NAVARRE, FL -- (Marketwire) -- 02/26/13 -- Twelve Oaks Recovery Center, a 102-bed residential addiction treatment facility for adults and adolescents, is set to sponsor two upcoming events that feature former professional athletes as part of their initiative to raise awareness for addiction, treatment and recovery. Both events take place on

The first event will take place at the Twelve Oaks Recovery Center facility at 8:30 AM, and is for patients only (media are invited to attend). Former NFL player and certified fitness trainer Kerry P. Taylor will help patients "Power Up Recovery with Fitness" by leading a boot camp exercise class, co-sponsored by Taylor's own 212 Health & Performance.

Taylor conducted a similar class in December 2012 at the Bowling Green Brandywine treatment facility in Pennsylvania, a sister facility to Twelve Oaks (both are owned by CRC Health Group, the nation's largest network of addiction treatment and related behavioral health services).

"We found the first event to be so much more than a fitness class for our patients," said Christina Hawkins, Senior Director, CRC Health Group. "Kerry encouraged and motivated our patients, and ultimately received a standing ovation from them."

"The goal is to augment treatment by equipping our patients with healthy behavior choices like exercise," said Hawkins.

The second event will feature former NBA player Chris Herren, who will be speaking about his journey through addiction and recovery at the University of West Florida Field House (11000 University Parkway, Pensacola, FL 32514) at 6:00 PM. This event is open to the public and media are invited to attend.

"Twelve Oaks is excited to be partnering with the University of West Florida to provide this motivational event," said Twelve Oaks Executive Director Paul Reed, LCSW. "Chris Herren is an inspiration and we are honored to be able to share his message with the local community."

Alcohol and drug-free since August 1, 2008, Herren struggled with substance abuse for much of his basketball career with the Denver Nuggets and Boston Celtics. He has since refocused his life to put his sobriety and family above all else, along with a mission to help others.

"Herren's message has been overwhelmingly positive," said Hawkins. "He is extremely open and honest about his experiences, and can relate to people in a unique and genuine way."

Both men's pro athlete backgrounds allow them to attract public attention, but their gift for relating to people and their humility are what keep people's attention, said Hawkins. They ignite in people the belief that they can achieve what once seemed impossible, she said.
