Minister of State Goodyear Promotes International Science Partnerships at European Conference
(firmenpresse) - OTTAWA, ONTARIO -- (Marketwire) -- 03/04/13 -- The Honourable Gary Goodyear, Minister of State (Science and Technology), will help launch at the European Parliament in Brussels tomorrow. The five-day conference brings together scientists, policymakers and business people from 100 countries to discuss scientific responses to global challenges.
During an opening address to delegates, the Minister of State will underscore the importance of supporting collaborative research as a means of promoting innovation and economic growth.
"Our government is committed to building on its initiatives to connect Canadian researchers and institutions to the wider world," he said today. "Our efforts are clearly making a difference. In a highly competitive global environment where innovation and interaction matter more each day, the world has taken notice of Canada."
In addition to holding discussions with public and private sector leaders in science and technology, the Minister of State will deliver remarks in a conference panel on international science collaboration.
The European Union is an important partner for Canada because of its strong science base, potential for innovation-based growth, and technological similarities with Canadian industry and academia. Since 1996, Canada and the EU have benefitted from an Agreement for Scientific and Technological Cooperation that facilitates scientific cooperation in areas of mutual interest and benefit. Since 2006, the Harper Government has invested nearly $8 billion in initiatives supporting science, technology and the growth of innovation firms in Canada, including $5 billion for advanced research, education and training; $2 billion for post-secondary infrastructure; and $1 billion for applied research and financing. This funding has helped to make Canada a world leader in post-secondary education and research and to create the knowledge and highly skilled workforce that are required for a more prosperous economy.
