Scientists From USC and Research 2.0 Launch 'March Metrics' -- the First World Championship to Honor Impactful Research
Student, Faculty and Citizen Scientists Compete Online; Participants Can Share Their Data and Accomplishments With the World

(firmenpresse) - LOS ANGELES, CA -- (Marketwire) -- 03/05/13 -- As college basketball prepares for March Madness, scientists from the USC School of Pharmacy and the Research 2.0 initiative are partnering for 'March Metrics' -- the first open competition to recognize the world's most impactful researchers.
Scientists who enter the month-long competition via the 'March Metrics' website will have their research measured across a broad range of objective metrics (both traditional and digital), from journal impact factor to social media buzz. The scientists deemed to have the most impactful research will be named 'March Metrics World Champion 2013,' and generate widespread exposure for their findings. Competition data from the winner as well as all runners-up will be posted online for anyone to see and analyze, so there will be a permanent record of each researcher's achievements.
"Competition is the fuel that drives innovation," said Llewellyn Cox, PhD (), program administrator for research at the , and founder of . "We want to create an environment that gives scientists a taste of the same competitive spirit and excitement that drives college athletics."
Dr. Cox went on to explain how March Metrics combines a variety of research metrics to give a very holistic view of research productivity for any scientist from anywhere in the world.
"March Metrics promotes the Research 2.0 philosophy, which asserts there are no 'one size fits all' answers in a diverse discovery economy," he added.
March Metrics is open to all researchers, including college students, graduate students postdocs, faculty and citizen scientists. The competition is 'open access,' so all metrics are publicly available. No competitor has an inherent advantage based on location, institution, journal subscriptions, academic credentials, etc. The competition measures output data for scientific activity objectively, independent of any traditional "prestige points."
