Northern territories plan improvements to connectivity

(firmenpresse) - WHITEHORSE, YUKON -- (Marketwire) -- 03/06/13 -- Leona Aglukkaq, Minister of Health, Minister of the Canadian Northern Economic Development Agency (CanNor), and Minister for the Arctic Council, today announced investments in four projects to improve connectivity in northern communities.

"Our Government is proud to invest in projects that improve communications infrastructure for businesses and communities across the North," said Minister Aglukkaq. "These projects will improve access and reliability of connectivity, which is essential to the long-term economic growth of Canada's North."

Just over $800,000 is being provided for four projects. The projects include: developing a pan-territorial strategic connectivity plan; installing fibre optic cable for broadband to link the K'atlodeeche First Nation (KFN) in the Northwest Territories to an existing NorthwesTel cable; supporting a variety of information technology and management improvements for the K'asho Got'line Development Corporation, including a wireless intranet and a community web portal in Fort Good Hope, NWT; and undertaking a study about providing Yellowknife customers with fibre optics communications infrastructure.

"The Government of Yukon is committed to supporting initiatives that promote affordable and reliable information and communications technology infrastructure," Economic Development Minister Currie Dixon said. "This project will enhance efforts toward addressing telecommunications connectivity in the North, leading to increased potential for significant economic and social benefits for Yukon."

"CanNor funded a previous project to install the first kilometre of fibre optic cable in the community and train local installers," said Lyle Fabian of the K'atlodeeche First Nation. "And now, we have an opportunity to connect to an existing provider with this twelve kilometres of fibre - which we will install ourselves. This will allow us to service and lease more residential and commercial lots in the community, and make plans for long term economic development."

"As the oil and gas and the resource exploration sector is taking off within the Sahtu Region, we see the K'asho Got'ine Development Corporation (KGDC) as a significant player in the region, making information technology and internet communication realignment a must," says K'asho Got'ine chief Wilfred McNeely. "Of course, the human factor is always important, so training sessions will be prepared for the information management system users during the second stage of development."

"Our Government remains focused on four priorities, as outlined by the Prime Minister, that Canadians care most about: their families, the safety of our streets and communities, their pride in being a citizen of this country, and of course, their personal financial security," concluded Minister Aglukkaq.

Investment in these projects is made possible through CanNor's Strategic Investments in Northern Economic Development (SINED) Program and the Community Economic Development Program (CEDP) which is part of the Aboriginal Economic Development (AED) suite of programs. CanNor delivers on its northern mandate through funding programs, providing project management services, leveraging the federal role in the North, serving as a champion for northern interests and undertaking policy and research.
