Media Advisory: Canadian Contingent to Honour the Fallen at Groesbeek Canadian War Cemetery During the Nijmegen Marches

OTTAWA, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - July 21, 2010) - On July 22, the Canadian Forces
(CF) contingent participating in the 94th annual International Four Days Marches
Nijmegen will visit the Groesbeek Canadian War Cemetery in the Netherlands.
Comprised of 189 marchers, the contingent is stopping halfway through their 40
km walk on the third day of the Nijmegen Marches to pay their respects to some
2,338 Canadian soldiers and airmen who died in the battles to liberate the
Netherlands in 1944 and 1945.
In attendance at the parade will be Mr. Laurie Hawn, Parliamentary Secretary to
the Minister of National Defence, and Brig.-Gen. J.C. Madower, Contingent
Commander. The parade will be addressed by the CF contingent padre, Captain
Daniel Gilroy.
When: July 22 at 12:00 (noon) Central European Summer Time (6:00 a.m. EST)

Canadian War Cemetery
It is tradition that on the third day of the Nijmegen Marches, the Canadian
contingent halts at the Groesbeek Canadian War Cemetery for a memorial ceremony.
Many CF members consider their visit to Groesbeek the most important part of the
strenuous four-day march, as it represents our history, sacrifice, remembrance,
and the affection Canadians have received from the Dutch community since the end
of the Second World War.
Groesbeek Canadian War Cemetery is the largest gathering of Canadian war dead in
the Netherlands. As well as 2,338 Canadian graves, the cemetery contains the
Groesbeek Memorial, which commemorates 1,103 members of the forces of the
British Commonwealth who died during the campaign in North-West Europe and who
have no known grave.
The CF contingent began the Nijmegen Marches on July 20 and will complete the
four day march tomorrow, July 23.
