Professionals in High-Stress Jobs Are Most Susceptible

(firmenpresse) - NASHVILLE, TN -- (Marketwire) -- 03/27/13 -- Drug rehab professionals are treating more and more "white collar" professionals, such as doctors and lawyers, with prescription drug addictions, say the experts at Cumberland Heights (), one of the nation's leading substance abuse treatment centers.

Intake statistics show that these professionals, who work in high-pressure professions, are increasingly seeking treatment for addictions to opium derivatives commonly used as prescription pain medications, said Dr. Chapman Sledge, Cumberland Heights' chief medical officer.

"In the late 1990s and early 2000s, there was a huge push to prescribe opioids -- most commonly found in hydrocodone, oxycodone and oxymorphone -- for pain management," Chapman said. "Just to illustrate the extent of the issue, studies show that Americans use 99 percent of all hydrocodone produced in the world." Moreover, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention report that more than one-third of Americans 12 and older use prescription drugs for recreational use.

To help combat the problem, Cumberland Heights' Professionals Program provides tailored treatment and support to working professionals with prescription drug addictions, in addition to the rehab center's other inpatient and outpatient treatment programs.

"It's important that we inform America of the dangers of prescription drug abuse and come up with more ways to join in the fight against it," Sledge said. "Together, we should be seeking alternatives to habit-forming drugs and work toward those becoming the first choice in managing pain."

Cumberland Heights, open since 1966, has helped more than 170,000 patients through long and short-term treatment programs.
