mic AG: Subsidiary mic clean changes strategic direction and becomes SmartE
AG
- 'Smart Capital - Sustainable Growth': New focus on industrial processes
- High quality Supervisory Board supports expansion strategy
- Capital raising for SmartE AG planned as finance for growth
Munich, 28 March 2013 - 'Smart Capital - Sustainable Growth': behind this
slogan is SmartE AG, the new participation model of the Munich-based early
stage investor mic AG. The company that to date has traded as mic clean AG,
whose focus was on cleantech investments, has gained a new direction as
part of the re-naming. SmartE AG will focus on industrial processes and
invest in businesses at the interface between IT and industrial automation.
This topic, which is summarised by the concept of the 'Internet of things',
is also known in sub-sectors under the descriptors 'Smart Grid' and
'Industrial Ethernet'. One of SmartE AG's investment priorities will be the
energy industry.
Supervisory Boards support innovative 'Smart Capital' approach
The newly structured subsidiary in the mic AG portfolio will thus operate
as an independent stakeholder that will specifically invest in young
businesses as part of its investment focus. In doing so, SmartE will adapt
mic AG's proven business model and will combine the virtues of business
angels and venture capital investors in one company. The active cooperation
and the early phase, in which generally only business angels invest, will
be combined with the investment sums and professionalism of VC investors.
SmartE has found a Supervisory Board for this innovative approach that will
specifically support the company in its expansion strategy. SmartE AG's
controlling committee comprises Rolf Adam, Director Energy&Smart Grid
EMEAR (Cisco Systems GmbH), Dr. Andreas Breuer, Vice President Neue
Technologien (RWE Deutschland AG) and Immo Futterlieb, Senior Client
Partner (Korn/Ferry International).
'Network, Network and once again Network'
'Even classic venture capital investors are put off by the high risk that
is involved in investments in young technology companies without an
appreciable turnover. However, it is exactly this area that gives rise to
huge opportunities for successful investments. Particularly important
alongside the endowment with sufficient capital and good investment targets
are three further points: Network, network and once again network', mic
Chair of the Board Claus-Georg Müller is convinced. 'SmartE has exactly
that and has specifically gained further depth in this area with the
Supervisory Board. This combination will give rise to an innovative
business model that is seldom seen in Germany and Europe', continues
Müller.
Priorities 'Smart Grid' and Industrial Ethernet'
Just like the world-wide-web has changed sectors such as trade and finance,
the 'Internet of things' will, according to the assessment of experts in
the branch, permanently change the industry. According to a prognosis by
Cisco Systems, in 2020 37 billion objects will communicate with one another
worldwide. Above all machine-to-machine communication provides new
possibilities for optimisationand increasing efficiency. Through this
revolution, business processes will become more efficient, because costs
can be reduced and process speeds increased. In reality, the 'Internet of
things' has various manifestations, the energy industry calls it 'Smart
Grid' and it is described as 'industrial Ethernet' in the industry. 'SmartE
AG will begin precisely here and will invest in companies that will change
with the help of software solutions and intelligent industrial processes.
To finance the ambitious growth plans the current 100 per cent subsidiary
of mic AG plans to carry our a capital raising in the current year and to
thus attract strategic investors on board', explains mic CFO Manuel
Reitmeier.
'Completely New Solutions and Business Models'
The great economic potential that will result from the 'internet of things'
is firstly a topic of conjecture. 'It is a given that the 'internet of
things' will significantly influence our community and industry in the
coming years. Specifically in industrial processes, information technology
concepts such as 'everything as a service' (XaaS) or 'cloud services' will
lead to completely new solutions and business models. SmartE is one of the
few true VCs in this area and, together with its approach that it will
operate as a technology holding company rather than a financial investor, a
one-off in this future segment', Rolf Adam, Chair of the Supervisory Board
of SmartE, is convinced.
His Supervisory Board colleague Dr. Andreas Breuer views new technologies
and their deployment to bring about the energy revolution as indispensable:
'For this reason it is particularly important for me to support innovative
ideas and start-up companies. With SmartE AG, the best conditions are on
offer to bring venture capital, management experiences and technology
evaluations together.' Immo Futterlieb, SmartE Supervisory Board member is
also looking forward to challenging and inspiring teamwork: 'As Staff
Advisor and Senior Client Partner with Korn/Ferry International I have been
engaged with cleantech and start-up companies for years. Innovative
companies in the conflicting fields of climate change, energy revolution
and security of supply will co-create our future for the long-term. SmartE
AG's unique approach of accompanying these businesses convinced me
immediately.'
