This means you can pay a little less if you only have a few hours to spare and you want to see something specific. The gallery's most famous attraction is Leonardo di Vinci's Mona Lisa painting. There's a permanent crowd of tourists in front of this masterpiece.
Metropolitan, New York
This museum of art rocketed up the visitor tables with the help of the modern Alexander McQueen: Savage Beauty collection in 2011. As well as housing some stunning works by the likes of Caravaggio and Jackson Pollock, it also hosts lots of events such as educational talks and music concerts. The flight time may be a little longer than to European destinations but mean you can get a return flight and somewhere to stay for around GBP 500.
Hermitage Museum, St. Petersburg
The Hermitage is almost peerless in its comprehensive collection of three million works of art. Among them visitors can find amazing examples of paintings, sculptures, graphic works and even archaeological finds. As with many of these internationally-renowned galleries and museums, a visit is worth it to see the building alone!
Museo del Prado, Madrid
This museum features one of the finest collections of European art and has undoubtedly the best collection of Spanish art in the world. Famous works by Bosch and De Goya are some of the big highlights, but the main attraction is Las Meninas by Diego Velazquez, the leading light of the so-called 'Golden Age' of Spanish painting.
Uffizi Gallery, Florence
The Uffizi is one of the oldest art galleries in the world. The palatial surroundings are absolutely breathtaking. Over 1.5 million people visit works from Di Vinci, Raphael and Titian every year and the gallery is a must-see for anyone visiting Florence on a city break.
