(firmenpresse) - SAN CARLOS, CA -- (Marketwired) -- 04/03/13 -- John Peter (J.P.) Gallagher, passionate advocate of finding a cure for stomach cancer, passed away on February 26 after surviving stomach cancer for five and a half years. He was 43.

J.P. founded the Gastric Cancer Foundation (previously Fund) in 2008 following his initial diagnosis in 2007. Under J.P.'s guidance, GCF has been responsible for funding some of the most important stomach cancer research in the United States. J.P.'s vision will continue under Wayne Feinstein, GCF Board member who will assume J.P.'s role as Chairman.

"I am thankful that I had the opportunity to become a friend of J.P. Gallagher's, and I am grateful that he invited me to be his partner in building the Gastric Cancer Foundation," said Feinstein. "As I now follow J.P. as Chairman, the GCF Board and I will draw inspiration from his leadership, energy and spirit -- and we will do our work with renewed determination."

Under J.P.'s leadership, the Foundation raised millions of dollars for gastric cancer research from individuals and corporations. With the help of generous funding from Diane and Ronald Weintraub, in memory of their beloved daughter Beth Weintraub Schoenfeld, GCF partnered with Stanford University Medical School to open the first ever Gastric Cancer Registry. In addition, GCF has become an established resource for newly diagnosed patients and their caregivers, who can turn to the GCF website for authoritative information on the disease and how to live with the after effects of treatment.

Through his tireless work and leadership, J.P. will have a lasting impact on the medical community and grateful patients everywhere. GCF will continue J.P.'s legacy and honor his vision with continued commitment to furthering research and finding a cure for gastric cancer.
