Distracted Drivers: Asda Money Reveals How They Can Keep Their Eyes on the Road

(firmenpresse) - LEEDS, UNITED KINGDOM -- (Marketwired) -- 04/04/13 -- Asda Money looks at research which reveals that motorists are risking their safety, and the safety of other road users, by carrying out a range of activities while driving.

Recent figures show that almost a third (31%) of drivers text while behind the wheel, while one in six (17%) admit to putting on make-up or shaving while on the road(1).

With distracted driving a key factor in car accidents according to a major study(2), Asda Money offers motorists some top tips for keeping their eyes on the road.

Plan journeys in advance

Planning your journey in advance, even if that simply means putting the relevant details into your sat nav, will help you to remain focused on the task at hand. However, it is important that drivers always keep an eye out for road markings, signs, scheduled road works, closures or any other relevant information they may need on their journey.

Remove distractions

If you are planning to bring an array of gadgets on your journey it may be tempting to whip out your computer tablet or smartphone to help keep you occupied when your car comes to a stand still. However, statistics show that using a smartphone to access a social network while burning rubber to the road can be more dangerous than both alcohol and cannabis, reducing reaction times by 38%, compared to figures of 12.5% and 21% respectively(3).

As a result removing this temptation is crucial to increasing safety on your car journeys.

Take regular breaks

Taking regular breaks from driving, such as taking turns behind the wheel with another driver or stopping at a motorway service station will also help you avoid becoming overtired.

Create a soothing soundtrack

Researchers analysing the driving habits of a group of motorists found that those driving to easy listening tunes tended to demonstrate safer driving habits, while those listening to music styles such as heavy metal, tended to drive more quickly, thereby increasing their risk of road accidents(4).

Loading up your MP3 in advance or tuning your radio to a soothing station, could help to ensure that your journey goes off without a hitch.

Putting car insurance in place is also crucial to ensuring that you are covered in the event of an accident or breakdown. Comparing will help to ensure that you secure the best level of cover within your budget.
