Bronze-Age Brews: Archaeologists Discover Ancient Microbrewery in Cyprus

(firmenpresse) - LONDON, UNITED KINGDOM -- (Marketwired) -- 04/05/13 -- Led by Dr. Lindy Crewe from the University of Manchester, a team of archaeologists they believe was used as a kiln to dry malt and make beer approximately 3,500 years ago. The Early-Middle Bronze Age settlement of Kissonerga-Skalia, near Paphos in western Cyprus is rich in prehistoric remains, mostly dating from the earliest Neolithic occupation of the island through the Chalcolithic period.

In addition to the malting kiln, sets of pottery types and tool kits including grinding tools and mortars were also excavated. The tools may have been used to break down the grain after it was malted and before it was cooked in clay cooking pots. There were also juglets among the discoveries that likely contained yeast additives or sweeteners. (The yeast would have been wild or produced from grapes or figs, say researchers.)

According to archaeologists, beer was a common drink at the time likely because it was more nutritious than bread and unlike water, was less likely to contain pathogens that could make one ill.

Today, the most famous Cypriot beers are Leon and Keo and like back then, they are also the choice of drink at many social gatherings. The latter is a light refreshing pilsner type lager while the former is a pale amber lager. Food and drink continue to be what gatherings with friends and family in Cyprus are all about. Meals are social events and meant to be savoured and enjoyed at a slow and leisurely pace.

The best place to start your Cyprus holidays is at a local tavern with authentic Cypriot food and a Keo in-hand. Visitors looking for an authentic taste of the island should forego asking for a menu, which tends not to exist anyway, and ask the tavern's host for a dinner recommendation accompanied by a pint (or two) with the locals while exchanging stories of bygone eras.
