Homeless Connect Edmonton: Providing Services to Community Members in Need
(firmenpresse) - EDMONTON, ALBERTA -- (Marketwired) -- 04/05/13 -- This Sunday, 65 community organizations will once again come together for the tenth the largest event of its kind in Canada, at the Shaw Conference Centre. Free essential services are provided to those who are homeless or at risk of becoming homeless and in one day, Homeless Connect will serve more than 1,700 guests, thanks to more than 400 community volunteers, as well as generous sponsors and service providers.
Homeless Connect is coordinated through partnerships between Edmonton, the as well as more than 24 community leaders representing various sector organizations and agencies.
"This is the tenth Homeless Connect and although the homeless population is decreasing, these services are very-much in demand," said Susan McGee, CEO of Homeward Trust Edmonton. "By providing these essential services in one place, on one day, people learn about different services available and service providers are able to work together in one location.
Throughout the day, service providers offer guests services such as haircuts, dentistry, eye-care, foot care, counseling, laundry and warm meals. Additionally, each guest receives United Way's Care Kit, a care package of essential personal items including toothpaste, shampoo, soap, deodorant and hygiene products. Several service providers have been a part of the event since its inception in October 2008, and more new partners support the event every year.
"We are honoured to support Homeless Connect and by extension our local community," said Cliff Higuchi, vice-president and general manager of the Shaw Conference Centre. "Community partnerships help focus our collective strengths to find solutions, in our case as a meeting place to help address homelessness, one guest at a time."
Homeless Connect takes place twice a year at the Shaw Conference Centre. The convention centre is a proud founding partner of the event, contributing over $83,000 annually in services plus hundreds of hours of staff volunteer support on the steering committee and during each event.

Homeless Connect Edmonton is organized by volunteer committees that provide direction and support for the event. Homeward Trust Edmonton, a not-for-profit organization providing leadership and resources towards ending homelessness, coordinates the overall work plan and ensures the event aligns with related Edmonton initiatives.
