Mental Illness in the United States: Gary Larcenaire's Advocacy on Patient Care

Advocates such as have advocated an increase in research funds to be invested into understanding mental health, identifying potential biological drivers of mental health disorders, and possible therapeutic options. Additionally, there is an increased need to developing better education programs on how families of mental health disorder patients should better aid their love ones' needs. Gary Larcenaire is a renowned advocate for mental health awareness. was first drawn to advocating for patients of mental health following his personal experience with schizophrenia. Larcenaire's brother was diagnosed with schizophrenia before he was 20 years old.

Larecenaire worked closely with mental health experts and researchers to help develop a unique support curriculum to aid families in dealing with understanding the mental illness and to develop an environment that is beneficial for the patient. Studies find that families in which members are hostile, critical or overly involved actually result in a negative environment that may actually result in patient relapse.

About Gary Larcenaire:
graduated West Wood high school in Williamson County, Texas. He then attended Angelo State University, acquiring a bachelor's degree in Psychology in 1990. By 1994, Larcenaire completed a Master's of Public Administration and was inducted into the Pi Gamma Mu Honor Society. Larcenaire's first job was as a Care Manager and advocate for persons with Bi Polar, with an emphasis with patients with depression and schizophrenia. Larcenaire's work with mental health researchers, clinicians and families has earned Larcenaire the Humanitarian of the Year award in 2011. His efforts have increased our understanding of mental illnesses in the United States and improving patient treatment options. Larcenaire has been a champion advocate for mental illness and we are incredibly thankful for all of his efforts.
