Award supports the development of innovative new conservation techniques and technical analysis

(firmenpresse) - CAMBRIDGE, MASSACHUSETTS -- (Marketwired) -- 04/09/13 -- Harvard Art Museums are this year's recipients of the AXA ART Conservation Research Grant. The generous award from international art insurance specialist AXA ART Insurance will help to support innovative research in technical analysis, and the development of conservation and treatment methodologies for Mark Rothko's Harvard Murals, which were commissioned in the early 1960s. Led by a team of conservators, conservation scientists, and art historians, the research will be conducted jointly by two of the Harvard Art Museums' research centers: the Center for the Technical Study of Modern Art and the Straus Center for Conservation and Technical Studies.

For more than a decade AXA ART has supported conservation research projects that promise innovative and far-reaching contributions to the field of preserving cultural patrimony. Past recipients of the AXA ART Conservation Research Grant include: the Solomon R. Guggenheim Foundation and the Museum of Modern Art in New York, the Vitra Design Museum in Germany, the Tate Museum in London and the Centre de Recherche sur la Conservation des Collections (CRCC) in Paris.

"AXA ART is pleased support the Harvard Art Museums' research in preserving and advancing cultural heritage. We are confident that this work will add important reference to the field of art conservation, " said Chrisiane Fischer, President and CEO of AXA ART in the Americas.

The Center for the Technical Study of Modern Art at the Harvard Art Museums was founded in 2002 in partnership with the Whitney Museum of American Art in New York. Its mission is to study the materials and issues associated with the making and the conservation of works of art of the modern era and serve as a resource for conservators, scholars, and students by collecting, preserving, and presenting relevant materials and research.

Established in 1928, the Straus Center for Conservation and Technical Studies is the oldest fine arts conservation treatment, research, and training facility in the United States. The Straus Center specializes in the conservation of works on paper, paintings, sculpture, decorative objects, and historical and archaeological artifacts. It continues to play a leading role not only in preserving specific works of art but also in developing new methods and techniques for the field of conservation and in training the next generation of conservators.
