Water Receives Extra Emphasis at Annual Oil Sands Event
(firmenpresse) - TULSA, OKLAHOMA -- (Marketwired) -- 04/15/13 -- Water management will receive special emphasis at the annual Oil Sands and Heavy Oil Technologies Conference & Exhibition July 23-25 at the Calgary TELUS Centre in Calgary.
A two-day sequence of water presentations will join two tracks of sessions covering the technologies of bitumen production, processing and logistics at the event, now in its seventh year. In the past, the conference and exhibition, hosted by PennWell Corp., have had nearly 1,000 attendees.
Bob Tippee, editor of Oil & Gas Journal and director of the conference, said water issues are increasingly important in all unconventional oil and gas work. "Oil sands surface operations use water to process mined material, while thermal operations use water to generate steam," he said. "Operators face problems related to supply, treatment, and safe disposal."
Development of other unconventional hydrocarbon resources also raises water issues, Tippee pointed out. Producing oil and gas from shale, for example, requires large amounts of water for hydraulic fracturing. "Because water is important to all types of unconventional hydrocarbon production, and because those resources have become so important to energy supply, we added a water track this year covering the whole unconventional spectrum," he said.
The water sequence will have sessions on water resources and supply, groundwater issues, water retreatment and reuse and water residuals management. James Laughlin, managing editor of Water World and Industrial Water World, assembled and chaired an advisory board of water experts to design the track.
Subjects covered in the two non-water tracks include various aspects of thermal (in situ) operations, upgrading, geophysical work, surface issues, and emerging technologies.
The program also includes keynote speeches covering more-general topics such as the competitiveness of Alberta's oil sands products in the U.S. and two other plenary sessions, one on logistics and netbacks and the other on project updates.
The main conference begins July 24 with the keynote session. On July 23 the program offers specialty forums entitled Calgary Sulphur Forum and Heavy Oil 101.
