(firmenpresse) - OTTAWA, ONTARIO -- (Marketwired) -- 04/16/13 -- Health Canada today released the April 2013 issue of the Canadian Adverse Reaction Newsletter (CARN).

This issue includes an article on the suspected risk of "glistenings" associated with intraocular lenses (IOLs) implanted in the eye. Glistenings are fluid-filled microvacuoles that form when the IOL is in an aqueous environment. In 67 of 69 cases reported to Health Canada, the development of glistenings was reported to have affected the quality or amount of vision.

The second article discusses concerns raised in scientific literature and in international reports that exenatide, a synthetic peptide used in the management of type 2 diabetes mellitus, may be associated with an increased risk of pancreatic cancer. However, there is limited evidence to date.

A quarterly summary of health professional and consumer advisories is also included.
