Harper Government Supports Regional Readiness for Offshore Exploration
Strategy supports economic development in Tuktoyaktuk

(firmenpresse) - YELLOWKNIFE, NORTHWEST TERRITORIES -- (Marketwired) -- 04/17/13 -- The Honourable Leona Aglukkaq, Minister of Health, Minister of the Canadian Northern Economic Development Agency (CanNor), and Minister for the Arctic Council today announced funding to help identify the regional opportunities and requirements so communities can participate in and benefit from offshore oil and gas exploration.
"The Government of Canada recognizes that responsible resource development in the North has the potential to create jobs, growth and long-term prosperity," said Minister Aglukkaq. "This investment will help position communities in the Beaufort region of Northwest Territories to take advantage of the significant economic opportunities that offshore exploration has to offer."
"Our strong, independent North is built on partnerships," said NWT Deputy Premier Jackson Lafferty. "This investment in research is a critical step to ensure the infrastructure is in place to support socially responsible and environmentally sustainable economic development in Tuktoyaktuk and Inuvik. We are pleased to partner with the federal government and Inuvialuit Regional Corporation to support this strategy to strengthen our economy and create employment opportunities where they are most needed."
CanNor is investing just over $300,000 for Phase II of the Base for the Beaufort Strategic Plan. With contributions from other proponents, this project represents an investment of over $450,000. The Strategy will build on previous research and readiness planning activities to provide clear direction on how the region can maximize emerging resource development opportunities. This phase of the Strategy will look specifically at developing the marine support capacity at Tuktoyaktuk and the expansion of research activities related to offshore exploration. Particular emphasis will be placed on identifying and addressing infrastructure gaps in Tuktoyaktuk and identifying related regional business opportunities.
"Our Government remains focused on four priorities, as outlined by the Prime Minister, that Canadians care most about: their families, the safety of our streets and communities, their pride in being a citizen of this country, and of course, their personal financial security," concluded Minister Aglukkaq.
This investment is made possible through CanNor's Community Economic Opportunities Program (CEOP). CEOP is one of several economic development programs within CanNor. CanNor is responsible for coordinating and delivering Canada's economic development across the North, and for related policy development, research and advocacy.
