Minister Oliver Highlights New Milestones Supporting Responsible Development of Canada's Natural Resources

(firmenpresse) - CALGARY, ALBERTA -- (Marketwired) -- 04/18/13 -- The Honourable Joe Oliver, Canada's Minister of Natural Resources, today delivered remarks hosted by the University of Calgary's School of Public Policy to highlight new milestones in the Harper Government's aggressive efforts to support the responsible development of Canada's natural resources and create opportunities for Canadian companies in markets with energy needs.
"Our aggressive efforts to support the responsible development of Canada's natural resources continue to achieve important results," said Minister Oliver. "These outcomes support jobs and generate revenue for critical social programs. Therefore, it is essential that we remain focused on our plans, given that critical work remains."
In particular, the Minister highlighted:
The Harper Government continues to work aggressively to keep taxes low, introduce new environmental protections and strengthen relationships with new, emerging energy markets that would help make major resource projects a reality.
The Minister also announced an investment of $15 million toward the development and implementation of an International Policy Program at the University of Calgary that supports research that will inform governments and others as they work to diversify their economies.
"Today's announcement demonstrates our Government's commitment to research that supports jobs and long-term economic prosperity," said Minister Oliver. "Our investment in this new International Policy Program will support the development of policies and practices that increase Canada's competitiveness in global markets."
The University of Calgary's new International Policy Program, funded through Western Economic Diversification Canada's Western Diversification Program, will use a multi-disciplinary approach to assist Canada in diversifying its economy, markets and trade relations; in developing and marketing international governance expertise in the extractive resource industries; and in providing essential analysis on global economic and security issues.
