Professor J. Thomas McCarthy's treatise has been cited in more than 4,000
judicial decisions, including 10 U.S. Supreme Court opinions

EAGAN, MN, April 25, 2013 - The Intellectual Property (IP) and Science business
of Thomson Reuters, the world's leading source of intelligent information for
businesses and professionals, today announced that Professor J. Thomas McCarthy,
nationally renowned author, attorney and a 2012 IP Hall of Fame inductee, marks
40 years as a Thomson Reuters author. Professor McCarthy's treatise "McCarthy on
Trademarks and Unfair Competition" provides authoritative information and
analysis needed to successfully represent clients in formulating, registering,
licensing, protecting and litigating trademarks and related rights.

Originally published in 1973 as two volumes, "McCarthy on Trademarks and Unfair
Competition" now spans seven volumes and has been cited and relied upon as
authority in more than 4,000 judicial opinions, including 10 from the U.S.
Supreme Court. The publication explains trademark law with clear, concise
analysis of cases and statutes, and offers how-to guidance for registering
trademarks, examination of defenses and analysis of international aspects of
trademark law. Topics covered by the more than 30 chapters include secondary
meaning, likelihood of confusion and territorial extent of trademark rights, as
well as literary, artistic and entertainment rights.

"Trademark law has become a very important field, so I am lucky and blessed that
I picked a specialty that thrived and grew over the years," said Professor
McCarthy. "Now that I am retired from teaching, I spend all of my time reading
new materials on trademark law and writing updates and changes to my book. I am
always delighted to see my book cited by judges, which means that it's useful
and that judges, as well as lawyers and practitioners, find it helpful. "

Professor McCarthy is the recipient of many prestigious awards, including most
recently being inducted into the IP Hall of Fame, established and run by IAM
magazine. Professor McCarthy is also the founding director of the University of
San Francisco's (USF) McCarthy Institute for Intellectual Property and
Technology Law. The institute is named in his honor and he taught at USF for 36
years. In addition, Professor McCarthy is the author of a two-volume treatise,
"The Rights of Publicity and Privacy," a Thomson Reuters publication on
personality rights.

"We are thrilled to celebrate Professor McCarthy's 40 years with Thomson
Reuters," said Cynthia Murphy, senior vice president for the IP Solutions
business of Thomson Reuters. "His book is one of the top-selling Thomson Reuters
Legal Solutions titles in print and online, and we are proud to have him as one
of our authors. He has made significant contributions to the practice and study
of trademark law, and we commend his work."
