Fachpack 2010: Bizerba's automatic shipping system defines weight and volumes and automatically defines the cheapest shipping method.
(firmenpresse) - Balingen, 20th September 2010 – Bizerba will present a PC supported shipping solution at Fachpack 2010, the international specialist exhibition for packaging technology in Nuremberg, from 28th -30th September (Hall 9, Stand 140). The DWS system scans packages and weighs and dimensions them. All data is transferred to the superior host system via just one interface. The Parcel-Shipping-System (PSS) software automatically determines the cheapest shipping method.
In order to optimise costs in classic shipping, a company must select the cheapest shipping method for each product. There is the constant decision of whether to calculate the product according to weight or volume. The system solution from Bizerba consists of a hardware system to dimension, weigh and scan products (DWS) and the Parcel-Shipping-System (PSS) software.
A scanner identifies the product on the conveyor belt using the barcode. A scale weighs the product in dynamic operation, the volume system (VMS) determines width, height and length of the package. Speeds of up to three metres per second are possible. With the help of these values the system determines the corresponding volume and transfers all data to the superior host system.
The PSS software automatically decides, with the help of the tariff tables provided, whether the product should be calculated according to weight or volume, then determines the appropriate method of transport and creates the necessary shipping papers.
Finally the GLM-L labelling system affixes a label with the shipping data of the package and the identification of the determined carrier to the package. An RFID application can also optionally be used here.
"Thanks to this cost optimisation the investment is redeemed very quickly. The user can build all of the components into an existing infrastructure without any problems. A great advantage of the Bizerba solution is that the volume and weight data is transferred uniformly to the superior host system using just one interface. Therefore the system is fail-safe and fast and reduces errors and down times," explains Dieter Conzelmann, Director of Industry Solutions Market at Bizerba.
Secure processes in automated picking locations
The DWS can even be used in automated picking locations. "There are two interesting areas of use here. On the one hand, it enables weight and volume definition, finds suitable floor space for the products and makes the best use of storage space, and on the other hand it also reliably prevents serious errors in the warehousing process“, continues Conzelmann.
It is possible that an employee will specify the wrong location and the automated storage will then try to place a 1.2 m high palette in a 1 metre high storage space. This will either lead to a break down or even serious damage to the system.
