Asda Money reveals how the bond between a man and his dog can set pet owners back a staggering GBP 30,000(1) over a lifetime, as annual food, grooming and vet's bills mount up.

Asda Money looks at some of the most common health complaints of these dog breeds.
Labradors are prone to both hip dysplasia and elbow dysplasia, both of which can impair their mobility. Elbow dysplasia can cause lameness in the front legs as well as causing elbows to swell. Similarly hip dysplasia can also cause lameness in the hind legs as a result of an abnormality in the hip joints.
Osteochondrosis dissecans (OCD) of the shoulder can also lead to lameness and pain in the shoulder.
Atopic dermatitis (atopy) can cause skin infections as a result of chronic itchiness, leading dogs to scratch continually and damage their skin.
Boxers are susceptible to a number of different cancers which can act to lower their life expectancies. This breed is also prone to developing a heart condition called dilated cardiomyopathy (heart disease), which requires long-term medication to control.
The Boxers short face mean they struggle to breathe properly, resulting in Brachycephalic airway syndrome, meaning that it can collapse or get out of breath a result of a lack of oxygen.
Like the labrador retriever the golden retriever is prone to hip dysplasia, elbow dysplasia and atopic dermatitis (atopy) and Osteochondrosis dissecans (OCD) of the shoulder.
German shepherds are susceptible to a number of types of cancerous tumours, particularly haemangioma and haemangiosarcoma.
This breed can also succumb to painful and persistent deep skin infections, as a result of a condition called Pyoderma, which needs long courses of treatment.
German shepherds are also prone to elbow dysplasia and atopic dermatitis (atopy), Osteochondrosis dissecans (OCD) of the shoulder and dilated cardiomyopathy.
Cocker spaniels are prone to glaucoma, a condition which arises as a result of an increase in pressure in the eye, causing pain, and sometimes the loss of an eye if not treated.
Otitis externa is a chronic condition that leads to inflammation of the external ear canal, with the resulting ear discharge causing pain and discomfort for this breed.
With average annual vet bills coming in at GBP 177,3 dog owners could make significant savings by taking out pet insurance.
