(firmenpresse) - OTTAWA, ONTARIO -- (Marketwired) -- 05/01/13 -- The Honourable Jason Kenney, Minister of Citizenship, Immigration and Multiculturalism, issued the following statement on Asian Heritage Month:

"Today marks the beginning of Asian Heritage Month, a time for all Canadians to honour the innumerable contributions made by Asian immigrants throughout our country's history.

"Today, Asian countries comprise some of the top source countries for immigrants to Canada and Asian Canadians will continue to shape our national story for many years to come.

"This year marks the 60th anniversary of the Korean War Armistice. Canadians were some of the principal combatants in the Korean War. Our heavy contribution to the war effort, in the words of Prime Minister Stephen Harper, "forever solidified the friendship between our two great nations." This year is also the 50th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Canada and the Republic of Korea - otherwise known as South Korea.

"In recognition of these two special milestones, Prime Minister Stephen Harper designated 2013 as the Year of Korea in Canada. Throughout this year, a number of events will take place across the country to celebrate the contributions of the Korean community to Canada. Befitting such an important year for our two countries, the Year of Korea in Canada has also been chosen as the theme of this year's edition of Asian Heritage Month.

"As Minister of Citizenship, Immigration and Multiculturalism, I invite everyone to celebrate the contributions of Canadians of Asian origin to the building of our great country.
