Age-appropriate pharmaceuticals - a need and a challenge at the same time

(PresseBox) - There is considerable demand for the development of "pediatric and age-appropriate formulations". A challenging subject considering that there are still many open questions the pharmaceutical industry, the academic world and the authorities have to deal with. Under the heading "Formulating better medicines for children - Meeting the needs of the children" the "2nd Conference of the European Paediatric Formulation Initiative (EuPFI)" took place in Berlin from 21-22 September 2010. For Rottendorf Pharma as a contract manufacturer of solid dosage forms the conference offered an interesting forum.
The European Paediatric Regulation opens up new possibilities for industry and academia. Numerous medicinal products applied to children are presently without licence. The type of final dosage form (liquid, semi-solid, solid), taste masking and the creation of new or alternative dosage forms belong to the core issues when developing age-appropriate formulations.
Rottendorf Pharma has several technologies and the know-how to offer corresponding solutions in the field of solid dosage forms. Dr. Mesut Ciper, Pharmaceutical Technology, Rottendorf Pharma GmbH: "Effective taste masking can be reached e.g. by mixing excipients, by coating or by means of hot melt extrusion."
Being one of the major contract manufacturers of solid dosage forms in Europe Rottendorf Pharma focuses next to manufacturing and packaging increasingly on the contract development and invested amongst others in 2009 9 million euros into the construction of a new Development and Upscaling Center at its Ennigerloh site. In addition to the complete range of the established manufacturing technologies Rottendorf Pharma offers the latest cutting-edge technologies such as hot melt extrusion, hot melt granulation and pelletizing on a floor space of 2400 m2.
