Government Announces Measures to Strengthen Environmental Protection, and Encourage Sustainable Resource Development in Nunavut
(firmenpresse) - OTTAWA, ONTARIO -- (Marketwired) -- 05/02/13 -- Today, the Honourable Bernard Valcourt, Minister of Aboriginal Affairs and Northern Development, announced the coming into force of the Nunavut Waters Regulations under the Nunavut Waters and Nunavut Surface Rights Tribunal Act. New Nunavut Waters Regulations will build on existing efforts to streamline approvals for resource projects, strengthen environmental protection and support Canada's Northern Strategy.
"Canada's North is home to world-class reserves of natural resources, representing tremendous economic potential not just for Northerners, but for all Canadians," said Minister Valcourt. "Building on and as part of , our government is introducing measures to improve the conditions for investment in and development of the North's resources in a sustainable manner."
Specific improvements to the waters regime in Nunavut include the addition of an approved use of water or deposit of waste without a licence regime, establishment of a minimum threshold for an approved use of water and/or deposit of waste without a licence, a simplification of schedules relating to use of water and deposit of waste, the establishment of additional water management areas, and improved spill reporting and record keeping.
"The new regulations we're introducing will encourage investment in Nunavut," said the Honourable Leona Aglukkaq, Minister of Health, Minister of the Canadian Northern Economic Development Agency (CanNor), and Minister for the Arctic Council. "These changes will also ensure that resource development occurs sustainably so that the resulting economic benefits can be enjoyed by generations of Nunavummiut."
