(firmenpresse) - LONDON, UNITED KINGDOM -- (Marketwired) -- 05/09/13 -- The Honourable Joe Oliver, Canada's Minister of Natural Resources, today issued this statement following his meeting with the British Minister of State for Energy, Business and Enterprise Michael Fallon:

"This afternoon, I highlighted for Minister Fallon ways in which Canada is an environmentally responsible energy producer. Canada is one of the only major oil producing countries taking concrete action to fight climate change with soon-to-be federal regulatory requirements affecting its oil and gas sector. Environmental protection is a priority for our Government, and it is our position that the development of Canada's natural resources will not proceed unless it is done in a safe and responsible manner.

"I took this opportunity to emphasize to Minister Fallon that Canada's oil sands are a strategic key global resource with respect to their contribution to global energy security. We are an environmentally responsible energy producer, and a safe, stable and reliable supplier to the world.

"I had a discussion with Minister Fallon about the Government of Canada's concern that the European Commission's proposed measures for the Fuel Quality Directive are not based in science and fact.

"I emphasized to Minister Fallon that oil sands crudes have a similar GHG intensity to that of other heavy crudes consumed in the European Union (EU). Any measure that targets the oil sands while ignoring these other crudes is unacceptable, and all crudes must be treated based on actual GHG emissions.

"Finally, I highlighted that the Canada-EU trade and investment relationship is already strong. A number of European countries have invested significantly in Canada's natural resource sectors. As well, Canada and the European Union are negotiating a comprehensive economic and trade agreement that will take the Canada-EU trade relationship to new heights."
