Timeshare Consumer Group Warns That Florida House Bill Will Further Restrict Owners' Right to Resell or Transfer Their Timeshares After July 1
(firmenpresse) - TORRANCE, CA -- (Marketwired) -- 05/09/13 -- A timeshare consumer advocacy website, Timeshare Consumer Group (timeshareconsumersgroup.com), released a statement today voicing concern for owners of timeshare properties in Florida. Legislation passed in Florida on May 3 that will make it more difficult for timeshare owners to legally exit their timeshare resort contracts. The Florida Vacation Plan and Timesharing Act (HB 7025) will make numerous industry-backed changes to Florida's timeshare laws when the law takes effect July 1, 2013.
This developer-friendly legislation targets timeshare owners hoping to exit their unwanted timeshare contracts and the companies who assist them in ending their ownership. If passed, this law will create more obstacles for timeshare owners who wish to legitimately exit their ownership. More obstacles will likely equate to processing delays and/or the outright inability for the titleholder to end ownership. This may result in higher costs for timeshare owners from additional maintenance fees and tax liabilities. The legislation may assist resorts in keeping timeshare owners liable for these fees and taxes even after legitimate steps to end ownership have been exercised.
The timeshare industry is flooded with unhappy timeshare owners who have unsuccessfully sought assistance from their resorts in the face of rising maintenance fees, declining services, and overall dissatisfaction with their timeshare ownership. "My wife and I are in our late 60's and could not afford the additional (approximately $7,000) costs over the next two years. That fee is over and above the normal maintenance fees," said timeshare owner Ken Anderson of Tucson (Las Vegas Review-Journal, January 16, 2012).
Timeshare resort lobbyists, like Jason Gamel with the American Resort Development Association (ARDA), drafted this and similar bills to make exiting timeshares more difficult for consumers.
The Timeshare Consumer Group is an online database and forum of timeshare information and counsel. The group is dedicated to "filling the gap" with regard to providing consumer-centric information about the timeshare industry on the Internet.
