Harper Government Recognizes International Nurses Day

To mark International Nurses Day, the Honourable Julian Fantino, Minister of International Cooperation, today announced a new initiative to support the health sector in .

"Canada recognizes the important role nurses play in providing essential health services to local communities most in need," said Minister Fantino. "To commemorate International Nurses Day, I am proud to announce a new initiative that will provide long-term health benefits to children and their families in Mozambique through vaccination and the distribution of effective bed nets."

Today's announcement reaffirms Canada's commitment to improving the delivery of quality health care to . Accelerating Child Survival in Mozambique, through UNICEF, will help provide measles prevention to as many as 3.9 million children, and malaria prevention to as many as 600,000 families, through a vaccination campaign and the mass distribution of bed nets in three provinces.

Today's announcement reaffirms Canada's commitment to improving the health of mothers, newborns and children and reducing the number of preventable deaths. affirms Canada's commitment to international development investments such as improving the quality of health services. The new Department of Foreign Affairs, Trade and Development will maintain the mandate of poverty alleviation and help achieve greater efficiency, accountability and focus to continue to improve the lives of people in need around the world.
