(firmenpresse) - PRINCETON, NJ -- (Marketwired) -- 05/14/13 -- According to long-time employee benefits administrator , workplace wellness campaigns offer numerous benefits to employers -- and not just the obvious ones, like lowered healthcare costs. Workplace wellness programs can also increase employee morale and productivity -- and they can even enhance employee retention levels. To prove his point, Taffet points to a recent from human resources publication HR.BLR.com. The article shares some surprising new research into the benefits of employee wellness programs. Taffet has issued a new statement to the press, commenting on this new data.

The article cites a recent study, released by the Principal Financial Group. 45 percent of the employees surveyed say that an employer-sponsored wellness program would make them more likely to stick with the job. This number is up from 40 percent in 2011. "What this shows is that employees are coming to value workplace wellness more and more -- and thus, it is a real selling point for getting employees to stay with your company," Taffet remarks.

Additionally, 62 percent of those surveyed say that they believe workplace wellness programs help improve health and reduce the risk of disease. This figure, too, is up from 2011; then, it was only 55 percent.

The study goes on to suggest that workplace wellness programs offer "direct, work-related advantages for employees and employers." More than half of the employees surveyed claim that workplace wellness programs motivate them to work harder and to perform better. Moreover, 59 percent say that participation in a workplace wellness program gives them additional energy, helping them to be more productive. Finally, 43 percent of those who participate in workplace wellness programs miss fewer days of work.

"An employee wellness program is not only useful for keeping healthcare costs down," summarizes Gary Taffet. "It can also produce a much more motivated and effective team."

The HR.BLR.com article goes on to highlight the biggest problem that workplaces face when seeking to implement wellness programs -- namely, the struggle to drum up participation. "Those who participate in the programs are usually very enthusiastic, but getting employees to join in in the first place can prove challenging for HR departments," Taffet opines. "However, there are plenty of great ways for companies to overcome this problem, whether it's through offering incentives or simply providing education about the program's benefits."

According to the article, 34 percent of the employees who are offered a chance to join a workplace wellness program choose not to.
