(firmenpresse) - OTTAWA, ONTARIO -- (Marketwired) -- 05/24/13 -- The Honourable Dr. Colin Carrie, Member of Parliament for Oshawa and Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Health, today announced that the Government of Canada is providing more than $1.4 million in funding under the Healthy Living Fund for community-based projects across the country that will help Canadians lead healthier lives.

"We want to increase opportunities for Canadians to be physically active so they can lead a healthier lifestyle," said Dr. Carrie. "These projects will provide resources to help promote healthy living practices among those who are at risk of chronic illness due to unhealthy weight or physical inactivity."

Physical activity plays an important role in the health, well-being and quality of life of Canadians. People who are physically active live longer, healthier lives. Active people are more productive, and more likely to avoid illness and injury.

These projects will help promote physical activity for children, seniors, the disabled, and Aboriginal Canadians by developing support for those who work closely with these groups. Community health intermediaries, educators, and recreation workers will be provided with tools to help them build awareness and encourage their students or clients to improve their lives and overall health outcomes.

The Healthy Living Fund makes strategic investments to address the conditions that lead to unhealthy eating, physical inactivity and unhealthy weights.
