OP-Pohjola Group: Almost 30,000 Entrants from 650 Schools in the Fine Arts Competition for Children
(Thomson Reuters ONE) -
PRESS RELEASE
30 May 2013
Almost 30,000 children from around 650 primary schools participated in the Fine
Arts Competition with the following theme: "Discover biodiversity and create art
out of wildlife". The Competition was organised jointly by OP-Pohjola Group,
arts teachers and schools. This is part of an international fine arts
competition arranged by cooperative banks, and the best works from Finland will
be sent in, too. This was the 37th time the competition was organised in
Finland.
The Fine Arts Competition had three categories: the 6-8-year old, 9-10-year old
and 10-13-year old categories. The five best works in each category were given a
prize. In addition, one honourable mention was awarded in the 6-8-year old
category. The award ceremony was held in the Linnanmäki amusement park in
Helsinki on Thursday 30 May 2013. The prize-winners received a gift cheque
ranging from 50 to 500 euros and tickets for Norppaooppera in the Savonlinna
Opera Festival.
The winner in the youngest age category of 6-8-year old children was Helkky
Kaunisto from Liesjärvi. The subject of her work was "A red squirrel in the
woods". Jury members liked the realistically portrayed red squirrel in her work,
sensitivity, composition and the use of colours.
The winner in the category of 9-10-year old children was Adelia Lindholm-Ventola
from Tarvasjoki. The jurors praised her work, "Timid animals", for an
extraordinarily distinctive composition, harmonious ambiance and the
stereoscopic effect that the work comes across.
The winner in the category of 11-13-year old children was Eemil Korri from
Nivala. The jury praised his work for its extraordinarily beautiful depiction of
movement, rhythmic composition and controlled use of colours.
World biggest fine arts competition for children
- In their Fine Arts Competition entries, children interpreted the biological
diversity of flora and fauna and how vital they are to all of us. Above all, the
works reflected the children's momentous experiences, good knowledge and skills
and insightful observation of their immediate surroundings. Their work depicted
not only insects, mushrooms but also, for example, large wild animals in Finland
and various biotopes, explains Mikko Hartikainen, Counsellor of Education,
National Board of Education.
The competition is the world's largest fine arts competition and its
international final will be held in Italy in June, where our national winners
will represent Finland. Competitors will come from Finland, Italy, Austria,
Luxembourg, France, Germany and Switzerland.
