A Recent Study Wins the Attention of Meep, Highlighting the Need for Effective Monitoring so Children Don't Abuse Parents' Accounts

(firmenpresse) - TUALATIN, OR -- (Marketwired) -- 06/18/13 -- A current reveals alarming statistics regarding children's access to parent passwords and pin codes, relevant and insightful information for , an Android-based children's tablet made by Oregon Scientific. The kid-friendly wireless device specializes in the allowance of secure payments for downloads, ultimately avoiding the possibility of children misusing their parents' accounts.

The article reveals a study showing that eight in 10 children are knowledgeable of their parents' passwords or pin codes to laptops, phones, tablets or PCs. It also reveals that one in 10 children report that their parents consistently change passwords, but 18 percent of children "admit they regularly and sneakily look over their parents' shoulder to find it out."

The tech company weighs in on this issue. "This presents a problem," the makers of Meep commented. "Children are more than capable of figuring out their parents' online accounts, spending large sums on iTunes, PayPal or their parents' debit and credit cards."

The study also states that many children "incurred online costs unintentionally, and one in five said their parents never even found out." Claire Perry MP for the Devices Constituency and campaigner for online child safety responds to the trend. "The recent explosion of technology means it can be very difficult to manage as a parent, but we all have a responsibility to ensure children are safe and responsible online and parents need to play a big part in that," she said.

The tech company emphasizes this point by declaring an effective solution to monitoring technology. "At Oregon Scientific we designed the Meep and the e-commerce portion of the Meep in a way that parents do not need worry about their child over charging their accounts," they said. "Our Meep store uses coins that parents allocate to their child with one time transactions that the parent manages. So a parent can purchase $10 worth of Meep coins and those coins will then be present in the child's account. It stops overcharges from happening and also teaches kids how to manage a budget."

The article appears to align with the perspective of the tablet company, commenting on the need for parents to remain vigilant as many young children are "extremely technologically savvy." The spokesman for Virtual Piggy, a child-friendly payment services adds that, "if an adult has accounts set up on certain shopping sites kids can easily log-on and purchase items with literally one click, so if parents want to ensure they are not footing the bill for their kids' purchases they need to take precautions."

Oregon Scientific urges parents to discover the endless benefits of Meep, not only in the parental control settings, but also in the teaching model it provides in how to manage a budget. "Educating children on appropriately maintaining a budget is becoming more and more relevant," they said. "Meep can supply the control you need while also teaching your child important life lessons."
