Industry Notice: Brown Spruce Longhorn Beetle Ministerial Order Revised

(firmenpresse) - OTTAWA, ONTARIO -- (Marketwired) -- 06/20/13 -- Movement and disposal restrictions related to Brown Spruce Longhorn Beetle (BSLB) no longer apply to spruce bark and wood chips, but the movement and disposal of spruce logs and all types of firewood continue to be restricted in areas where BSLB has been detected.

The burden on industry to process and safely dispose previously regulated spruce bark and wood chips during processing activities at sawmills and lumber yards has been removed.

This decision was reached based on scientific review, and was supported during consultations carried out by the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) on the ongoing management of BSLB. The CFIA works closely with other federal departments and agencies, provincial and municipal governments, and industry on strategies to slow the spread of BSLB.

BSLB does not pose a risk to human health. It can, however, damage or kill stressed spruce trees. BSLB has been found in several locations throughout Nova Scotia. Aside from a solitary detection in New Brunswick in 2011, it has not been detected anywhere else in North America.

In order to slow the spread of BSLB and protect non-infested areas in Canada, the CFIA restricts the movement of spruce wood products from areas where BSLB has been detected. The most important way to limit the spread of this invasive beetle is to avoid transporting spruce materials such as firewood. Firewood of all types should be bought locally, burned on-site and never moved any significant distance. We all share the responsibility to help protect Canada's forests.
