To earn SmartWay certification requires an extensive commitment by transportation carriers to meet environmental compliance requirements and benchmarks that prove reduced energy consumption, improved efficiencies, and less air pollution. Polar Express incorporated several measures that include installation of APUs in all tractors for efficient heating and cooling to minimize idling time; popular Driver Incentive programs that reduce pollution by decreasing speed, lowering RPMs and idling time; installing aerodynamic bumpers, mirrors and low-rolling resistance tires. They also invested in new technologies that ensure customers' are safe throughout the cold chain.
Kool Pak LLC, parent company of Polar Express Transportation, engaged with SmartWay in 2009 and earned their certification in 2011. Since 2004, SmartWay program helped businesses achieve fuel savings of USD 8.1 billion, saving 65 million barrels of oil, reducing 28 million metric tons of carbon dioxide, 478,000 tons of nitrogen oxide and 22,000 tons of particulates.
