NMU Taps Zhone Technologies to Improve Wireless Network Access
Zhone's VDSL2 technology to increase connectivity for off-campus housing
Oakland, CA - June 27, 2013 - Zhone Technologies, Inc. (NASDAQ: ZHNE), a global
pioneer in FTTx network access solutions, today announced a new VDSL2 deployment
with Northern Michigan University (NMU), located in Marquette, Mich. Designed as
a cost-effective way for the university to provide residents in nearby off-
campus apartments with exceptionally fast and reliable wireless Internet, VDSL2
is an access technology that uses the existing copper infrastructure originally
designed for traditional telephone services to deliver high speed Internet.
Known as a high-tech university because it provides a campus-wide blanket of
high-speed wireless and regional wireless coverage with WIMAX services to
students' homes, as well as laptops to every student, NMU needed to extend high
speed Internet access to 20 off-campus apartment buildings. Faced with the need
to upgrade a wireless system running over legacy ADSL, NMU turned to Zhone's
VDSL2 technology to meet current and future expectations for reliable high speed
Internet service.
"The new VDSL2 system was sold as a plug-and-play solution to upgrade our
current ADSL system, offering significantly higher connectivity speeds," said
Don Salo, telecommunications director at Northern Michigan University. "After
initial setup of the controllers, the installation of WiFi routers went smoothly
and provided a seamless transition from ADSL to VDSL2. The end result delivered
increased speed to our residents at affordable costs for the university."
The emergence of VDSL2 technology provides a great opportunity for carriers
across the globe to provide customers with the bandwidth they desire at
affordable costs. While speeds vary, VDSL2 can deliver asymmetric and symmetric
aggregate data rates up to 200 mbps downstream and upstream, while ADSL
broadband services have fixed bit rates and cannot support high definition video
due to bandwidth limits.
"VDSL2 was easily installed in the apartments within the university's current
infrastructure, allowing for increased bandwidth to align with students'
expectations," said Brian Caskey, chief marketing officer at Zhone. "The
platform gives Northern Michigan University increased wireless network
efficiency and high-speed data services."
Zhone's FiberHome portfolio of products and solutions fulfills the network
requirements of broadband expansion efforts for residential users. For more
