Dr. Mohammad and His Team of Addiction Experts at Malibu Horizon Launch E-Cigarette Awareness Campaign as Big Tobacco Companies Dramatically Ramp-Up Advertising Budgets

(firmenpresse) - MALIBU, CA -- (Marketwired) -- 07/01/13 -- Dr. Akikur Mohammad, Founder of Malibu Horizon, recognized by many as one of the top in California, and Assistant Clinical Professor of Psychiatry and the Behavioral Sciences at the University of Southern California, announced today that he and his team of addiction treatment experts from Malibu Horizon are encouraging the public to be extremely cautious with regard to e-cigarette use and 'creative' marketing that big tobacco companies are using to lure new customers. According to a , tobacco companies are expected to spend millions of dollars on e-cigarette advertising this year and the U.S. market for e-cigarettes is projected to double to about $1 billion.

One of the world's leading addiction experts and pioneers, Dr. Mohammad said, "It is critical for people to understand that e-cigarettes are not regulated by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), so tobacco companies can market them through television ads in spite of the fact that traditional cigarette television ads have been banned since 1971. Tobacco companies have cut back on consumer marketing; however, the e-cigarette craze and the FDA's lack of regulation presents a terrifying set of circumstances. Make no mistake, e-cigarettes pose a serious health risk and we simply don't know enough about the long term effects to let big tobacco companies brainwash our youth with fancy marketing. Did we not learn anything from the mass devastation caused by traditional cigarettes?" Mohammad added, "In a , the FDA warns people that e-cigarette smoking is indeed dangerous and people need to be cautious; however, it may take years before official FDA regulations are in place and if we, as medical professionals, don't raise awareness about the health risks and very serious addictive potential with e-cigarettes, we are failing."

Dr. Mohammad and his team will add the topic to their popular town hall events, which are designed to inform the community about the options available when considering proper and effective treatment for drug and alcohol abuse. Mohammad added, "Remember, whether the nicotine is contained in vapor or traditional smoke, it is still nicotine and very addictive. The public cannot let themselves be fooled, just because vapor 'may' be a safer alternative than smoke, by no means does that mean it is safe!"
